Career in Music or Money? Do I follow my head or my heart?

I am at a cross roads in my life. With A levels in both math and music, I am struggling to decide which path to follow.

My heart says music. I am passionate about it and I love playing guitar and piano. I love being around other musicians and playing in bands. I would love to make a career out of music if I could, but I understand it's risky and there are no guarantee's of being able to make a decent living.

On the other hand, I am also good with numbers. My parents are pushing me towards a more academic degree. And with salaries for investment bankers reaching as much as 100k a year not including the offensively large bonuses those guys rack up, it is very tempting to chose this option.

Perhaps if I could get some work experience somewhere like Rowan Dartington it would make my decision a little easier to make. I think I would enjoy the fast paced style of the work, but I suppose I won't know unless I try.

The Online Shopping Debate

Internet shopping is the ultimate convenience. You can snuggle up on your sofa, with a glass of wine, a blanket, a good film and order your food shopping for the next week!

However, after getting into a debate with a few of my friends – is it just pure laziness? During the ‘big freeze’ over Christmas one radio DJ made me laugh after saying all the people who bought their presents online which weren’t going to arrive deserved it!

Harsh words, but his argument was they should have got off their lazy bums and gone shopping – there is no thought gone into it anymore.

Nowadays, you can buy anything online. Food, clothes, music, TV services and even to the extent that you can compare gas and electricity prices and switch providers at a click of a button!

Ultimately it does raise more money for companies and help boast growth, but yes it is laziness! But at the end of the day my argument is that if you someone receives a present how can they tell it was bought online anyway?

Benefits of Games

The great philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein remarked in his book Philosophical Investigations that it is very hard to exactly define what a game is and neither do the elements of the game like rules, play and competition help in making the job of defining any easier. According to him, games are defined by us as a number of different activities that bear some resemblance to each other.
Due to the high level of commercialization of games, a lot of fun quotient has been lost. Earlier, it was said that winning does not matter, participation is what matters. However, in recent years, with a lot of prize money at stake, winning has become a prime importance than participating. €˜Gamesmanship€™ or €˜sporting spirit€™ has almost become a thing of the past. Also, there is a high degree of rigidity within the rules of any game which sometimes takes away a lot of fun. Again, without conforming to any one of these rules will lead to the collapse of the whole system of gaming which again would deprive the contestants of the fun factor.
However, one of the biggest advantages of playing games is that they install certain positive values in people. Team games especially help in building team spirit and create comradeship amongst team members. A lot of corporate houses nowadays encourage their employees to indulge in team games in order to build a more harmonious relationship among them. Even now, there is nothing like games to bring people together.

Study with Playing Games

Usually, most people, especially children consider games to be a distinct activity from education. However, games are more often than not used by teachers as an educational tool for children. This method is extremely popular among teachers due to the fact that children learn faster if education is disguised in the form of a gaming activity. Most people learn faster if they are having fun.
There are numerous ways in which education can be imparted while still retaining the guise of playing games. The most popular ways are using puzzles that constantly require using some information in order to win the game and the conclusion is something that imparts some kind of knowledge to the child. Puzzles also require one to use one€™s little grey cells extensively thus giving a lot much desired brain exercise in an age where creativity has been suppressed and brains dulled thanks to the idiot box.
A lot of puzzles have also been targeted at adults, for example crosswords or jumbles which are one of the oldest forms of indoor games in the modern world. Take for instance, the rapid popularity of another indoor game or puzzle - Sudoku. Unlike other popular indoor games like scrabble or crosswords which required an extensive knowledge of words, Sudoku has targeted number crunchers. International Sudoku competitions are being held nowadays. These kind of cerebral games have acquired such world wide popularity that most daily newspapers publish them and many networking sites allow you to match wits in the cyberspace.
